KVA DAV College for Women, Karnal is a premier institution of Haryana with the distinction of being the first women's College in the State. Inspired by Swami Dayanand Saraswati's vision of the potential in women and the need to educate and empower them this College was established in 1957 (by a group of Arya Samajis led by Lal Makhan Lal ji, Dr Ganesh Das ji and Principal Mela Ram Ji Barq) with only hundred students, 4 lecturers and 4 members of non-teaching. Now it has strength of about 1763 students, 93 lecturers and 37 members of non- teaching staff. After 29 years of its inception, the management of the College was handed over to DAV College Managing Committee, New Delhi which is the biggest, non government educational society in India running about 900 institutes across all parts of India and abroad. The name of Kumari Vidyavati Anand was prefixed in 1997 to this institute in honour of her selfless and magnanimous service in the field of education. Over the years, the College has grown into a renowned and acknowledged institute of the area, serving the cause of value based higher education.
It has been declared a "Model College" and "Pace setting Women's College" by National Institute of Education, Planning and Administration in 1992.
The College is located in the heart of Karnal, catering to the needs of students from the urban and the adjoining rural areas. The campus spreads over an area of 3.5 acres. The campus has spacious classrooms, well equipped labs, sprawling lawns, cafeteria, hostel and auditorium.
Being a women's College, subjects befitting their interest and temperament are introduced from time to time. Computer applications, Biotechnology, Office-Management and Secretarial practice have been added. Psychology, Physical Education The traditional Schemes of Basic Science, Commerce, Language and Social Science including Home-Science and Music have been strengthened. Moreover, quiz contest, group discussion, seminars, paper-reading contests, essay-writing competitions, field trips and visits to trade fair, book fair, picnic spots, botanical institutes, zoological parks, fishery farms, tissue culture laboratories, forensic science laboratories etc. are organized from time to time.
There are numerous associations and societies at KVA DAV College that harness the potential of young girls. NCC, NSS, N.S.O., Student's Council, Society of Youth Welfare and Cultural Affairs, Arya Yuvti Parishad, Literary Societies, Women Development Cell, Eco-Club, Quiz Club, Career Guidance and Placement cell, Red Ribbon Club, Red Cross Society, Legal literacy cell - all are committed to nurturing the talents of young girls and making them responsible citizens of India.
The College also offers popular Career Oriented Courses in Functional English, Cosmetology, Food Processing and Fashion Designing , GIS and Remote Sensing, Web Designing & Animation,. Further the College is also introducing short term certificate courses to enhance the holistic personality of the students.
The College works within the framework of the system of affiliated Colleges of Kurukshetra University, where curriculum is designed by the University itself.
The academic performance is excellent with 100% pass percentage in the University Examination. Invariably a large number of students procure positions in academic merit lists of the University and in co-curricular activities, sports and cultural activities, setting examples worth emulating.
